Cyclonic storm to form over Bay of Bengal by December 2: IMD

The India Meteorological Department has forecast a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal around December 2, the weather forecast bulletin on Thursday stated.

A well marked low pressure area lying over southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression in the next 24 hours, the bulletin said. Further, the depression is likely to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm around December 2, it said.

Fisherfolks are advised not to venture into southeast Bay of Bengal from Thursday (November 30) to December 3. Those out at sea are urged to return to Andaman and Nicobar Islands and coast by Thursday.

Meanwhile, heavy rain is likely to continue in Tamil Nadu and an orange alert has been issued for areas including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Villupuram on December 2 and 3.

The weather department said heavy rainfall is likely over Puducherry from Thursday to December 4; Kerala and Mahe on Thursday and Friday and over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from Saturday to December 4. Central Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to receive light isolated rainfall with thunderstorm and hailstorm.

Parts of Tamil Nadu have been pounded by heavy rains since Tuesday night leading to waterlogging, traffic congestion and tree felling in several places. Greater Chennai Corporation in a post on X said that all subways except the Rangarapuram 2-wheeler subway have been cleared for traffic by Thursday morning.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Minister M K Stalin directed ministers, legislators and representatives of local bodies to provide necessary support to people in the rain-hit areas. Authorities declared a holiday for schools in Chennai and nearby districts, PTI reported.
