Delhi HC permits Mahua Moitra to drop media houses from lawsuit
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra informed the Delhi High Court Tuesday that she seeks to delete as parties several media houses from her lawsuit against publishing of alleged defamatory content against her related to the cash-for-query allegations.
Moitra’s counsel also submitted before a single judge bench of Justice Sachin Datta that he was not pressing any interim relief in the matter Tuesday and that the lawsuit would only continue against two defendants — BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai.
The high court thereafter permitted Moitra to file an amended memo of parties and carry out appropriate changes in the pleadings in the lawsuit. The matter has been listed next on December 5.
Advocate Abhimanyu Bhandari, appearing for Dubey, submitted that Moitra has committed perjury as after denying the allegations she had subsequently accepted sharing her login credentials with a businessman.
In her lawsuit, Moitra has sought permanent injunction against Dubey, Dehadrai, social media platform X, Google, YouTube and 15 media houses, to restrain them from making, publishing, circulating alleged defamatory, false and malicious statements against her. She has also sought damages of Rs 2 crore and public apology from Dubey and Dehradrai in three English, Hindi and Bengali newspapers each.
Among the various reliefs sought in the interim application, Moitra has sought an ex-parte ad-interim injunction against the defendants and removal of the allegedly defamatory content posted against her on social media until the disposal of the suit. Dubey has accused Moitra of taking bribes from a businessman to ask questions in Parliament, urging Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to constitute an inquiry committee to look into the charges against her.
